Safety
Falls in trains gaps cause lifelong injury or death. Portable ramps can be unsafe. Hundreds of slips, trips falls occur at train gaps in Sydney, Australia every year. Damages totaled $1.7M for just one lawsuit for Sydney Trains in 2023.
Accessibility
Without independently accessible transit, people are often forgotten on public transit and miss their stops. Staff are known to rely on sticky notes to track who needs to get off where. Riders can’t easily get off early if they feel unsafe, or unwell. Passengers are segregated and their choice of where to sit is limited. On trains, sometimes people want to switch cars because they feel uncomfortable or unsafe in the one they initially boarded. Portable boarding ramps prevent this choice.
Cost savings
The cost of raising and straightening platforms and tracks are substantial. Raised boarding pads and gap fillers don't work at curved platforms or where trains can't stop accurately. 40% of networks have curved geometries and non-CBTC trains where existing solutions fail.
Efficiency gains
Gaps and steps between trains and platforms prevent independent usage of trains and slow down trains when they're used for boarding. Ramps are slow, unreliable to those forced to used them, can be unsafe to both users and staff to deploy. The ramps are often used at stations where the ramp is too steep to meet unassisted disability grades of incline. Ramps can't be made longer due to their weight. Several prototypes of automated ramps have been developed but almost all of them are limited in some way or another. Many fall short of broad deployment and it's often not until cities and states are adopting brand new stations and trains where new trains and new stations ensure a gap free level access experience that the problem is eliminated.
